David R. Craig: Bridging the Gap Between Scientific Innovation and Market Success
In the high-stakes world of biotechnology, the distance between a breakthrough in the lab and a life-saving treatment in the pharmacy is often measured in decades and billions of dollars. Navigating this "valley of death" requires a rare hybrid of expertise: the technical precision of a scientist and the strategic foresight of a seasoned executive.
David R. Craig, MBA, the Co-Founder and CEO of Sarcomatrix, has spent over three decades mastering this balance.
From his early days as a pharmacist to leading global marketing for industry titans like Gilead Sciences and Amgen, Craig has become a pivotal figure in the commercialization of complex pharmaceutical products. Today, at the helm of Sarcomatrix, he is applying a lifetime of operational and strategic acumen to solve one of aging’s most persistent challenges: muscle wasting.
The Mission: Combating Muscle Wasting at Sarcomatrix
Since taking the reins as CEO in November 2022, Craig has focused Sarcomatrix on a critical biological target:
α7β1 integrin. This protein is essential for muscle regeneration and stability. Under his leadership, the Reno-based biotech firm is developing oral small molecules designed to treat:
  • Sarcopenia and Cachexia: Addressing age-related muscle loss and wasting associated with chronic illnesses.
  • Muscular Dystrophies: Providing near-term solutions for patients with rare genetic disorders, with a specific focus on supporting cardiac muscle—the leading cause of mortality in these populations.
Craig’s approach is defined by "patient-centered outcomes," ensuring that the science doesn't just work in a controlled setting but translates into improved quality of life for those with limited treatment options.
A Legacy of Market Access and Impact
Before Sarcomatrix, Craig built a reputation as a "launch specialist." His career is a roadmap of some of the most significant pharmaceutical successes in recent history:
  • Alexion & Portola Pharmaceuticals: As Head of Market Access, Craig was instrumental in the adoption of Andexxa, a breakthrough reversal agent for certain blood thinners. He famously reduced the hospital adoption time for the product from over 12 months to just three, achieving a 300% increase in sales through rigorous clinician education and reimbursement optimization.
  • As of April 2026, Alexion Pharmaceuticals (a subsidiary of AstraZeneca) has a market capitalization of approximately $40.33 billion USD, positioning it as a significant entity in the rare disease biotechnology sector.
  • Gilead Sciences: In the late 90s, Craig led global strategic marketing for Gilead’s hepatitis pipeline. His work in market research and patient journey mapping laid the groundwork for products that would eventually redefine the treatment of viral hepatitis.
  • As of April 2026, Gilead Sciences (GILD) has a market capitalization of approximately $172B - $188B USD, making it one of the world's most valuable biopharmaceutical companies. The company generated $28.9 billion in product sales in 2025, driven heavily by its HIV portfolio, including Biktarvy.
  • Amgen: His early career at Amgen provided a foundation in strategic planning and sales operations during the company's formative years of growth.
  • As of April 2026, Amgen (AMGN) has a market capitalization of approximately $186B–$191B, ranking it among the world's largest independent biotechnology companies.
Strategic Versatility: The "Lean" Executive
Craig’s effectiveness stems from a diverse toolkit. He holds a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt and is a Project Management Professional (PMP)®, credentials more common in manufacturing than medicine. This focus on operational efficiency has allowed him to build "single-source" global data warehouses for real-time sales reporting and construct robust cold-chain distribution networks that ensure 100% on-time delivery for sensitive biologics.
Beyond his corporate roles, Craig serves as an Entrepreneur In Residence at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he mentors the next generation of biotech innovators, and operates D. Craig Consulting, advising firms like Pardes Biosciences on SARS-CoV-2 antiviral strategies.
Education and Early Roots
David Craig’s career is underpinned by an interdisciplinary education. He earned his MBA from Pepperdine Graziadio Business School and holds a Bachelor of Science from South Dakota State University, where he studied Pharmacy, Mathematics, and Business.
In a nod to his multifaceted nature, Craig was also a concert violinist during his undergraduate years, graduating Cum Laude from a pharmacy program currently ranked among the top in the nation. This blend of mathematical logic, pharmaceutical knowledge, and the disciplined creativity of a musician continues to drive his unique approach to the business of saving lives.
